Product Overview

The Master of Flow Regulation

A globe valve is a linear-motion valve designed for throttling and regulating flow. Unlike gate valves, the disc moves perpendicular to the seat, creating a controlled restriction that allows precise adjustment of flow rate, pressure and temperature.

The characteristic S-shaped flow path creates higher pressure drop than a gate valve — but delivers unmatched control accuracy. REW manufactures globe valves in four core configurations: Z-type (standard), Y-type (low resistance), angle pattern (90° turn), and forged steel (high-pressure).

Precise Throttling
Linear disc travel enables accurate flow control from 0% to 100%
Bubble-Tight Shutoff
Metal or soft seat delivers zero-leakage isolation when closed
4 Configurations
Z, Y, Angle and Forged Steel — one solution for every application
High Pressure
Forged steel variants rated to PN400 / Class 2500

Working Principle

Linear Motion, Precise Control

Step-by-step operation sequence of a REW globe valve — from closed to fully open position.

Globe Valve Technical Blueprint
01
Closed Position
The disc is seated firmly against the seat ring. Handwheel fully clockwise. Stem is at its lowest position. Flow is completely blocked.
02
Opening Sequence
Counter-clockwise rotation of the handwheel raises the stem. The disc lifts away from the seat, beginning to open the flow path through the body.
03
Throttling Position
Partial lift of the disc creates a controlled restriction. Flow rate is proportional to disc travel. This is where globe valves excel — precise modulation.
04
Fully Open Position
Disc is lifted to maximum travel (typically equal to seat diameter). Flow path is established through the S-shaped body. Pressure drop is at its designed maximum.
05
Flow Characteristics
Equal-percentage or linear flow characteristic depending on disc profile (flat, needle, parabolic). Ideal for control applications where predictable response is critical.
06
Backseat Feature
When fully open, the stem shoulder contacts the backseat surface in the bonnet, allowing packing replacement under full system pressure without depressurizing the line.

Technical FAQ

Engineering Questions

Answers to the most common technical questions about REW globe valves.

What is the difference between globe valve and gate valve?+
Globe valves are designed for throttling and flow regulation with a disc that moves perpendicular to the seat, creating controlled restriction. Gate valves are designed for on/off service with a gate that lifts completely out of the flow path. Globe valves have higher pressure drop but offer precise flow control, while gate valves have minimal pressure drop when fully open.
What are the different types of globe valves REW manufactures?+
REW manufactures four core configurations: Z-Type (standard pattern with highest throttling accuracy), Y-Type (45° angled stem for lower pressure drop), Angle Pattern (90° flow diversion for compact layouts), and Forged Steel (small bore, high-pressure service to Class 2500). Each serves specific application requirements.
What is the maximum operating temperature for REW globe valves?+
Maximum temperature depends on body material and seat type. Cast iron valves: up to 200°C. Carbon steel valves: up to 425°C. Alloy steel WC6/WC9: up to 595°C. Stainless steel valves: up to 650°C. Forged steel valves: up to 600°C. Soft-seated valves (PTFE/EPDM) are limited to 200°C maximum.
What standards do REW globe valves comply with?+
REW globe valves are manufactured to BS 1873, API 602, API 623, DIN 3356, and ASME B16.34 standards. Testing is per API 598, ISO 5208, and BS 1873. Flanges conform to BS 4504, ANSI B16.5, DIN 2501, and ASME B16.47. Face-to-face dimensions follow BS 1873, API 623, DIN 3356, and ASME B16.10.
What materials are available for globe valve bodies?+
Standard body materials include Cast Iron (GG25), Ductile Iron (GGG40), Carbon Steel (WCB/WCC), Stainless Steel 304 (CF8), Stainless Steel 316 (CF8M), Alloy Steel (WC6/WC9), Brass, Bronze, and Duplex SS. Forged steel options include A105, F304, F316, F304L, F316L, and F22. Special alloys available on request.
How often should globe valves be maintained?+
Recommended maintenance interval is 12-24 months depending on service conditions. Maintenance includes: operational test, packing adjustment/replacement, stem lubrication, visual inspection for leakage, seat condition check, and bolt torque verification. Harsh environments (steam, chemicals) may require more frequent maintenance.
What is the pressure testing procedure for REW globe valves?+
Every valve undergoes: (1) Shell test at 1.5× working pressure for specified duration — no visible leakage permitted. (2) Seat test at 1.1× working pressure — zero visible leakage per API 598. (3) Backseat test for OS&Y design valves. All three tests are documented with test certificates provided with every shipment.
Can REW manufacture custom-sized globe valves?+
Yes. REW can manufacture globe valves in custom sizes from DN15 to DN1200, custom pressure classes up to PN400/Class 2500, special materials including NACE MR0175 compliant alloys for sour gas service, and non-standard face-to-face dimensions. Custom drawings are typically delivered within 48 hours of specification confirmation.
What is the typical lead time for globe valve orders?+
Standard sizes (DN15-DN200): 2-4 weeks. Large sizes (DN250-DN600): 4-6 weeks. Special sizes (DN600+) or exotic materials: 6-10 weeks. Emergency orders can be expedited. Exact lead times confirmed at time of quotation based on current production schedule and material availability.
What type of seat is best for my application?+
Metal-to-metal seats (Stellite-faced): high temperature, abrasive service, steam. PTFE/RPTFE: chemical service, wide temperature range, bubble-tight shut-off. EPDM: water service up to 80°C. NBR: oil and hydrocarbon service. Viton: high temperature chemical service. Selection depends on medium, temperature, pressure, and required leakage class.
What is the difference between Z-type and Y-type globe valves?+
Z-type has a horizontal seat with S-shaped flow path — highest throttling accuracy but highest pressure drop. Y-type has a 45° angled seat with more streamlined flow path — lower pressure drop, better for high-flow applications, easier to clean and inspect. Z-type is preferred for precise control; Y-type is preferred for main steam lines and large sizes.
Can globe valves be automated?+
Yes. REW globe valves can be supplied with electric actuators, pneumatic actuators, or hydraulic actuators. Gear operators are standard for valves DN200 and above. Actuator sizing and mounting flanges per ISO 5211. Positioners and control accessories available for modulating service.
What disc profiles are available?+
REW offers multiple disc profiles: Flat face (standard throttling), Needle (precise low-flow control), Ball (on/off service), Parabolic (equal-percentage flow characteristic), and Plug (linear flow characteristic). Disc profile selection depends on required flow characteristic and application.
What coating options are available?+
Standard coating is fusion-bonded epoxy (FBE) in blue or green, 250-300 microns DFT. Options include: bitumen coating for underground service, hot-dip galvanizing, bare finish, and custom RAL colors. Special coatings available for corrosive environments. Coating specification confirmed at time of order.
What documentation is provided with each shipment?+
Standard documentation includes: Material Test Certificate (MTC) per EN 10204 3.1, Hydrostatic Test Report (shell, seat, backseat), Dimensional Inspection Report, Painting/Coating Certificate, Certificate of Compliance, and Installation/Maintenance Manual. Third-party inspection certificates available on request.
What is the backseat feature and why is it important?+
The backseat is a secondary sealing surface in the bonnet that contacts the stem shoulder when the valve is fully open. This allows packing replacement or adjustment while the valve remains under full system pressure — eliminating the need to depressurize the line for maintenance. Standard feature on all REW OS&Y globe valves.
What is Stellite hard-facing and when is it needed?+
Stellite is a cobalt-based alloy (Stellite 6 or 21) TIG-welded onto seat and disc surfaces for erosive and high-temperature service. It provides 5x longer service life compared to standard stainless steel seats. Recommended for steam service above 400°C, abrasive media, and critical applications where seat erosion would cause frequent maintenance.
Are spare parts available for REW globe valves?+
Yes. Complete spare parts inventory maintained for all standard sizes. Available spares include: discs/plugs, seat rings, stems, packing sets, gaskets, bolts/nuts, handwheels, bushes, and bonnet gaskets. Spare parts typically dispatched within 48-72 hours. Recommended spare parts list provided with each valve order.
What is the warranty period for REW globe valves?+
Standard warranty is 12 months from date of commissioning or 18 months from date of shipment, whichever occurs first. Warranty covers manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship. Extended warranty available on request for critical applications. Full warranty terms provided with quotation.
