Built for the Crushing SeasonJuice, Molasses & Massecuite Duty
Rehman Engineering Works has kept Pakistani sugar mills running since 1948 — pumps, valves, castings and reverse-engineered spares for cane juice, syrup, molasses, massecuite, bagasse ash and food-grade CIP service. Designed for abrasive, acidic, high-Brix media and a 150-day non-stop season.

Pakistan Crushes Around 80 Million Tonnes of Cane
Pakistan is among the world's largest sugarcane producers, with roughly 90 operating sugar mills concentrated in Punjab, Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. A mid-size mill crushes 6,000–12,000 TCD; the biggest units exceed 25,000 TCD. Crushing runs roughly November to April, and once a mill starts it does not stop — every hour of downtime is cane spoiling in the yard and lost recovery.
That season model dictates everything about the equipment. Pumps and valves must survive fibre, sand and mud in raw juice, 6–7 pH swings after sulphitation, 60–95 °C process temperatures, 90+ Brix molasses and massecuite that behaves like warm tar. Around them sit bagasse-fired boilers, co-generation sets, distillery and effluent plants, and increasingly a food-processing wing — edible oil, ghee, dairy, beverages, rice and confectionery — where the same utilities become food-contact duty.
REW's role has not changed since 1948: supply the rotating and flow-control equipment, keep it alive through the season, and manufacture the spare when the original supplier is long gone or six months away.
Cane Yard to Packed Sugar
Nine stations, each with its own wear mechanism. Drag the row sideways — every card shows what REW supplies into that stage.
Cane Yard & Weighbridge
Trucks and trolleys are weighed, unloaded by grab crane and fed to the cane carrier. Mud, stones and tramp iron enter here and travel with the cane all the way to the mills.
Preparation & Milling
Knives and shredders open the cane; a 4–6 mill tandem extracts juice under hydraulic loading while imbibition water is added counter-currently. Bagasse leaves at ~50% moisture.
Juice Weighing & Heating
Mixed juice is screened, weighed and raised to 70–75 °C in primary juice heaters before liming. Fibre and grit make this the hardest pumping duty in the plant.
Clarification & Sulphitation
Lime and SO₂ adjust pH to 7.0–7.2, flocculant is dosed and mud settles in the clarifier. Low pH excursions attack cast iron aggressively.
Evaporation
A quadruple or quintuple effect concentrates clear juice from ~15 to 60–65 Brix under vacuum, using exhaust steam and vapour bleeding for economy.
Crystallisation & Pans
Batch or continuous vacuum pans boil syrup to grain, producing A, B and C massecuite. Viscosity at C-strike can exceed 10,000 poise.
Centrifugal Separation
Batch and continuous centrifugals separate crystal from mother liquor. Final molasses goes to storage or the distillery; sugar goes to the grasshopper conveyor.
Drying, Grading & Packing
Sugar is dried, cooled, graded and bagged in 50 kg sacks. From here the hygiene regime is food-grade, not industrial.
Boiler House, Co-Gen & Effluent
Bagasse fires the boilers, steam drives turbines and process; ash and wash water head to the effluent plant. Utility failure stops the whole mill.
What Actually Fails in a Sugar Mill
Ten problems every mill engineer in Pakistan recognises — and the engineering answer we apply.
Sand & Mud Erosion in Juice Pumps
Cane arrives with field soil. Abrasive solids scour impeller vanes and wear rings, dropping head within weeks of season start.
Acid Attack After Sulphitation
A pH excursion below 6.5 turns clear juice corrosive; grey iron casings pit and gland areas wash out.
Massecuite Crystal Damage
High-shear pumping shatters crystal, destroys purity drop and loads the centrifugals with fines.
Molasses Cold-Start Seizure
High-Brix molasses stiffens overnight; the pump is started against a solid column and shears the coupling or trips the motor.
Bagasse Ash Slurry Wear
Ash is glass-hard silica. Standard cast iron slurry pumps and elbows are through in a single season.
Boiler Feed Pump Cavitation
Deaerator level swings and hot condensate cut available NPSH; the first stage cavitates and the rotor scores.
Knife Gate Valves Jamming on Fibre
Bagacillo and fibre pack the seat pocket; the gate will not seal and the operator cannot isolate for maintenance.
Scaling in Evaporators and Heaters
Calcium and silica scale kills heat transfer, forcing higher steam consumption and mid-season boil-outs.
Obsolete Imported Spares
Much of the installed base is 1960s–1990s European or Indian machinery; original suppliers no longer support the model.
In-Season Breakdown Pressure
An unplanned stop means cane deteriorating in the yard and growers at the gate. Lead time beats specification every time.

Questions From Sugar & Food Plant Engineers
Yes. We supply and rebuild positive-displacement and low-shear centrifugal massecuite pumps with jacketed casings, wide-throat suctions and slow-speed drives so crystal damage is avoided on B and C massecuite.
Yes. Most of Pakistan's sugar plants are European, Indian or Chinese supply. We reverse-engineer impellers, casings, shafts, sleeves, gate discs, seats and gearbox parts from a sample, an old drawing or a measured sketch, with material test certificates.
Emergency in-season spares are handled on priority from our Lahore works, with pattern stock for common pump sizes. Send the mill number, tag number and a photograph and we will confirm a realistic date the same day.
Cast iron and ductile iron for headers and molasses, CF8M / SS316 wetted parts for acidic juice and syrup, CA6NM or hardened high-chrome for ash and grit-laden duty, and food-grade elastomers on sanitary lines.
Cane juice carries sand, mud and fibre. Wear is controlled with correct suction geometry, reduced tip speed, larger vane passages, hardened or stainless wear rings and replaceable liners — not by oversizing the motor.
Yes. Multistage boiler feed pump rebuilds include rotor balancing, new sleeves and bushes, diffuser refurbishment, mechanical seal replacement and a performance run before dispatch.
Yes. SS316L sanitary butterfly and ball valves, tri-clamp fittings and CIP-compatible seals for dairy, beverage, edible oil, ghee and confectionery plants, with surface finish to specification.
Yes. Off-season scope typically covers pump and valve removal, workshop overhaul, alignment, re-installation, no-load and load trials, and a condition report with recommended spares for the next season.
Bores are machined up to 2400 mm on our vertical turret lathes, which covers every size used in a sugar mill, evaporator station or effluent plant.
